360° Fisheye Panoramic Cameras: A Better Way to Cover Wide Areas

    {当前产品的产品关键词轮巡使用}

    One Camera, One Complete View

When you install fixed cameras, the first thing you usually need to consider is coverage.

A single camera may cover the entrance, but leave the side area outside the frame. Add another camera and the coverage gets better, but so do the cable runs, installation work and maintenance.

PTZ cameras solve part of this problem by allowing the operator to change the viewing direction. However, the camera can only look in one direction at a time.

A 360° fisheye panoramic camera takes a different approach. Instead of moving between different directions, it captures the surrounding area through an ultra-wide-angle lens and creates a panoramic view from a single installation point.

For certain indoor applications, this can be a much simpler setup.

360° Coverage with Different Resolution Options

VEEMCO's panoramic camera range includes 5MP, 8MP and 12MP models, depending on the required field of view and image detail.

The cameras use ultra-wide fisheye lenses, with 1.7mm and optional 1.44mm lens options available for wider coverage.

A higher resolution becomes especially useful when the image needs to be digitally enlarged after recording. Instead of looking at several separate camera channels, the operator can work from one panoramic image and focus on the area of interest.

This is useful in places such as retail stores, offices, classrooms and reception areas, where knowing what is happening across the whole room is often more important than monitoring a single point.

    What About Fisheye Distortion?

This is probably the first question many installers have when they hear "fisheye camera."

Yes, an ultra-wide lens naturally produces distortion. The important part is how the camera and software handle the image.

Panoramic video can be dewarped into different viewing perspectives, allowing users to look at a particular section of the scene without having to install another camera.

For projects that require deeper integration, SDK/API access and OEM/ODM support can also be important. For example, a developer may want to combine panoramic video with people counting, heat mapping or other video analytics.

In these cases, the camera is only one part of the system. How easily it works with the customer's software can be just as important.

    PoE Makes Installation Easier

The camera also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE).

One Ethernet cable handles both network communication and power, so there is no need to install a separate power cable next to the network connection.

This is particularly convenient for ceiling-mounted cameras in:

    • Retail stores

    • Offices

    • Classrooms

    • Commercial buildings

For installers working on multiple cameras, simpler cabling can make a noticeable difference during installation.

Local Storage as an Extra Recording Option

The panoramic cameras also support a Micro SD card, providing local recording in addition to NVR storage.

This can be useful for smaller installations or as a backup recording option when the camera is already connected to a network video recorder.

It also gives installers more choices when designing a system instead of making every application dependent on a central recording device.

    Night Vision and Two-Way Audio

Wide coverage is useful during the day, but security cameras still need to work after dark.

IR night vision helps maintain visibility in low-light environments, while two-way audio allows users to communicate with people in the monitored area.

For example, a store owner can talk to someone at the entrance, or an office manager can communicate with a visitor without being physically present.

These are relatively simple functions, but they can make the camera more useful in everyday operation.

Where Does a 360° Fisheye Camera Make Sense?

A panoramic camera isn't the right choice for every surveillance project.

If you need to read a license plate 30 meters away, a long-range camera or PTZ is obviously more suitable.

But if the priority is seeing the entire room or area from one point, a fisheye camera can be a good fit.

    Typical applications include:

    Retail Stores

One camera can provide an overview of the sales floor, entrance and checkout area.

    Offices

It can cover meeting rooms, reception areas and open workspaces without filling the ceiling with multiple cameras.

    Classrooms

Teachers, students and classroom activities can remain within the same panoramic view.

    Commercial Buildings

Lobbies, waiting areas and other shared spaces can benefit from a wide field of view.

Three Things to Check Before Choosing a Panoramic Camera

Don't choose a fisheye camera simply because it has the highest megapixel number.

There are three things worth checking first.

    1. Mounting Height

The height of the camera affects how much of the floor can be seen and how much detail is available.

A camera installed at three meters will behave very differently from one installed in a high-ceiling space.

    2. Coverage or Detail?

Ask what matters more for the project.

If you need to understand what is happening throughout a room, panoramic coverage is a strong advantage.

If you need to identify a person or license plate at a long distance, another type of camera may be a better choice.

    3. Integration Requirements

For an NVR-based system, check compatibility with the existing equipment.

For a customized project, it is worth checking ONVIF, SDK, API and VMS compatibility before making a final decision.

Is a 360° Camera Better Than Four Fixed Cameras?

    Not necessarily.

    It depends on the application.

Four fixed cameras can provide better image detail in specific directions, but they also require more hardware and installation points.

A 360° fisheye camera is more suitable when the main requirement is a continuous overview of a relatively compact area.

The key is to choose the camera based on the actual site rather than simply comparing specifications.

    Final Thoughts

A panoramic camera is not designed to replace every CCTV camera.

Its real advantage is much simpler: it gives you a broad view from one installation point.

For shops, offices, classrooms and other indoor spaces where overall visibility is important, this can reduce the number of cameras required and make the surveillance system easier to manage.

VEEMCO offers 5MP, 8MP and 12MP panoramic camera options, with PoE, fisheye lens configurations, local storage and integration support for different security projects.
